COMPUTER SCIENCE PROGRAMME

The Computer Science Department on inception was headed by a Resident Consultant in the person of Professor Iya Abubakar.  Upon the withdrawal of his services in February, 2000, Dr. Fakinlede (former Computer Systems Manager) also doubled as acting coordinator, Computer Science Programme until his disengagement from NMC services in June, 2003 . In the interim, Mrs Jennie Bamidele acted as Head of department until February 2004 when the incumbent - Dr. D.C Onyekwelu a former Director, Information Communication Technology Dept. of  NUC on retirement joined the Centre as Acting Coordinator of the Department.

Staff
The staff strength of this department is currently two (2);The Ag.Co-ordinator, Mrs. Bamidele and Mrs. Angela Anyamele (a Confidential Secretary).

 Objectives of the Department
The objectives of the Department are among others are :- primarily to enable the National Mathematical Centre fulfill its mandate in accordance with the decree establishing it.  In particular the department tries to ascertain the areas in which the University Departments need intervention, assistance and cooperation of the National Mathematical Centre so as to fill in the gaps, which exist, in the teaching, training and research provided in the Universities Departments

Currently, the Department's priorities are:

Activities Programmes in Computer Science Programme

Programmes of activities in Computer Science, like in other academic disciplines in the National Mathematical Centre, consist of Foundation Postgraduate Courses, Research Lecture Series, Seminars, Symposia, Workshops and Conferences designed to achieve the objectives of the Centre

Foundation Postgraduate Courses

These involve lectures and tutorials aimed at providing rapid introduction to some specialized topics starting from the basics.  The duration of such courses is normally between two and four weeks.  It is usually designed for graduates registered for M.Sc. degree or even M.Sc holders.

Research Lectures Series

These are research oriented lectures and tutorials in which the participants are exposed to more advanced topics in a specific field.   The activities are usually programmed with follow-up lectures and offer of research supervision over a number of years leading to Ph.D degree of a University.  Participants would normally have a M.Sc degree.

Workshops

Workshops are generally training activities, and usually the duration would not exceed two weeks.  Activities of this type are generally topical, Intensive and research oriented.  Participants can be Ph.D holders, or even professors in the specific field.

Conferences

These are meetings at which original research papers and new results are presented.  Conferences may last a few days but not exceeding one week or ten days in exceptional cases.  It is an occasion for Scientists in the same area of research to meet and discuss current topics, and establish further contacts.

Seminars

Generally a seminar is an activity in which an expert in an area discusses new results or new findings with other specialists, in one or more lectures.

Admission Process

Whenever any of these activities is to be mounted it is announced in Universities and Polytechnics, and interested participants are invited to apply.  The applications are normally made on specific forms which are returned to the National Mathematical Centre for processing and final selection.

The participants in these Courses and Workshops are mainly postgraduate students and lecturers from the Universities and Polytechnics.  It is hoped that more Courses and Workshops will be mounted that can attract participants from the private sector like Banking, Commerce and Industry and from the public like Federal, State and Local Government Departments and Parastatal.

The Department also offers consultancy services to the community within which the Centre operates.

Current Activities

Presently the Department is working on a “train-the-trainer” project; which is aimed at equipping teachers of computer science at the primary and secondary school levels of education with necessary skills to make them more effective
