INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE EDUCATION
A programme designed to revamp mathematics learning had become necessary in Nigeria because the performances of students nationwide in mathematics WASSCE over the years are progressively improving since the advent of MIP in year 2002 at the Centre.
The main function of the Institute is to demystify the teaching and learning of mathematics at all levels of education. To disabuse the notion the mathematics is abstract. The Institute ensures that the following are carried out in the Centre.
- To prove that mathematics is concrete and real by the introduction of models (Kit)
- To make mathematics practical and not theoretical
- To enable students find out the origin of formulas not just cramming them
- To train teachers of new innovations
- To introduce Nigerian Students to the importance of mathematical games and how to play them.
- To supply teaching modules, workbooks and kits for workshops and ensure the instructional materials are effectively used.
From a layman’s point of view, MIP is a research oriented intervention activity that incorporates mathematics teacher’s workshops NMC mathematics teaching and learning materials (e.g. Teaching Modules, Basic Concepts on Difficult Areas in Mathematics, Workbooks, Games, Charts, Models), and student – teacher monitoring/evaluation activities into a unique project.
It is hypothesized that all these activities are expected to re-awaken, reactivate, and re-energize the teaching potentials of these teachers to perform creditably well in their:
• Class Teaching
• Student Assessment, and
• Managerial Activities.
GOALS OF MIP
- To expand (Inter) MIP to all States and LGAS in Nigeria.
- To intensify research, and book publication activities including production of the second volume of Basic Concepts on difficult areas in mathematics and solutions to WASSCE and NECO – SSCE questions from 2006 – 2010.
- To intensify the use of ICT exemplified in NMC instructional materials including the production of Teachers Wiz kits, CDs of teaching different mathematics concepts in a simplified version.
