National Mathematical Centre(NMC)

NATIONAL, PAN-AFRICAN AND INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIAD PROGRAMMES

A programme to help students acquire critical thinking skills and to introduce the students to the role of mathematics and science in day to day human endeavour. It also encourages the students to develop a passion for mathematics and the sciences and consider a career in these disciplines as an early stage.

The Centre has been organizing mathematics Olympiads all over the country to select participants for the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiads (PAMO) and International Mathematics Olympiads (IMO). Because of the dynamism of the Centre in this direction, it has attracted the mandate from Federal Ministry of Education to be in charge of Olympiads not only for mathematics including Computer Science but also for some other basic sciences- Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Therefore, through this activity, the Centre helps identify, nurture and mentor the next generation of mathematical scientists that can use their knowledge and talent to contribute in nation building.
Nigeria, through the Centre hosted the 17th edition of the Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) in April, 2007 and Nigerian student won Gold for having the highest score in the African Mathematics contest.
So far, the Centre has identified and trained students from all over the country to represent Nigeria in 6 Olympiads, namely:

  1. International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)
  2. Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO)
  3. International Chemistry Olympiad (IchO)
  4. International Physics Olympiad (IPh.O)
  5. International Biology Olympiad (IBO), and
  6. International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI)
