SCHOOL OF POSTGRADUATE STUDIES
In pursuit of the mandate to train high level manpower in the mathematical sciences, the Centre had since 2007 initiated its own postgraduate degree programmes in the mathematical sciences (at M.Sc and PhD levels) in collaboration with six Nigerian Universities in the following areas not being offered in any Nigerian University namely:
- Mathematics of Finance with University of Abuja:
- Mathematics in Biomedicine with University of Jos;
- Mathematical Modelling and Simulation of Engineering Systems—Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi;
- Mathematical Ecology—Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi;
- Mathematical Modelling in Maritime Technology—Federal University of Technology, Owerri;
- Information and Communication Technology in Mathematics Education—University of Ilorin, and
- Information and Communication Theory—Obafemi Awolowo University Ife
The National Universities Commission (NUC) had since approved the running of financial Mathematics with University of Abuja.
The Postgraduate Programme which commenced in 2007/8 is now getting more popular from the society, considering the fact that the enrolments were 34 in 2006/2007 session, 36 in 2007/2008 session and 49 in 2008/2009 session; and the quality of intakes had equally improved.
Apart from the NUC accreditation of our facilities as being of desired standard, our Special Postgraduate curricula is acceptable to the various proposed collaborating universities and it had registered over 60 Professors of Mathematics who now participate in the programme.
The Centre had graduated its first set of students with the MSc degree awarded by the University of Abuja and efforts are being made to ensure the certificate issued by the University of Abuja reflects the inputs of the Centre.
Proposed Postgraduate Courses
The Centre had proposed additional three courses under the Joint Degree Programme with the University of Abuja. They are:
Mathematics in Biomedicine: The philosophy of the proposed course is to produce high-level personnel who can proffer solution to medical problems using mathematical apparatus and model.
Communication Technology and Information Theory: This programme focuses on the production of highly trained personnel with broad-based computing and telecommunication knowledge for information and communication theory and practice in our Universities, Industries and Government. The programme is unique in that it is the in-depth knowledge in both computing and telecommunications.
Mathematics Education in Information and Communication Technology: The programme encourages the development of technology and information systems in the teaching of mathematics with application of relevant research and software designs.
